Holanek, Pajak Win Moore County Women’s Amateur
By Betsey Mitchell
The field for the Moore County Women’s Amateur hosted by Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club on July 23-24, 2018 included three past champions; Mary-Katelyn Holanek (2013), Laura Kinsman (2014), and Patty Moore (six time champion).
Last year’s champion, Gabby Weiss has since become a PGA professional and is on staff at Pinehurst Resort making her ineligible to compete.
Mary-Katelyn Holanek has won for a second time besting the field by four strokes. The Friendship Division (playing from the forward tees) was won by Pine Needles member, Jane Pajak. Jane’s first round score was a stellar 71, the only sub-par round of the tournament.
The delicious awards luncheon featured the best fried chicken in Moore County and the weather although threatening both days, stayed dry and not terribly hot. Many thanks go to the entire professional staff at Mid Pines for another wonderful golf tournament.
The real champion of this event remains Friend to Friend, the nonprofit organization serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in Moore County. Anne Friesen, the executive director of Friend to Friend reported that North Carolina has one of the highest rates of human trafficking in the nation. She went on the thank all involved with the Moore County Women’s Amateur for their care and financial support.
Through sponsorship, player contributions, and an array of excellent raffle donations, this year’s donations topped $8,000 bringing the total raised by the MCWA to over $35,000 in the past six years. Special thanks go to the title sponsor, Leith Chrysler Dodge / Honda of Aberdeen, NC.
Next year’s tournament will be hosted by The Country Club of North Carolina.
